The Big Five: A Guide to Africa's Most Iconic Wildlife

When people talk about an African safari, the Big Five inevitably comes up. Originally a hunting term referring to the five most difficult animals to hunt on foot, the Big Five has since been reclaimed by the tourism industry as the ultimate wildlife checklist.

The Big Five consists of the African elephant, Cape buffalo, lion, leopard, and rhinoceros. Each of these animals represents something extraordinary about the African bush.

The African Elephant

The largest land mammal on Earth, the African elephant is both gentle and formidable. Watching a breeding herd move through the bush, with tiny calves sheltered between the legs of their mothers, is one of safari's most touching moments. Bull elephants, often solitary, can weigh up to 6,000 kilograms.

The Cape Buffalo

Don't let their bovine appearance fool you. Cape buffalo are considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. They live in large herds and have been known to charge with little provocation. Their curved horns form a distinctive boss on top of their heads.

The Lion

The king of the jungle - though they actually prefer open savannah. Lions are the only truly social cats, living in prides that can number up to 30 individuals. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to spot them active and hunting.

The Leopard

Solitary and secretive, leopards are the hardest of the Big Five to spot. They're nocturnal hunters who often drag their kills into trees to keep them from scavengers. The best places to see them include the Sabi Sand and the Kruger's southern regions.

The Rhinoceros

Both white and black rhinos are critically endangered due to poaching. Seeing one in the wild is increasingly rare and precious. Conservation efforts across southern Africa are working tirelessly to protect these magnificent creatures for future generations.

Where to see the Big Five: Kruger National Park, Sabi Sand Game Reserve, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, the Serengeti, and the Masai Mara all offer excellent chances of spotting all five on a single trip.
